Dry Places

To Dwell in a Dry Land

Psalm 68:6   God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

a man walks into a bar...
"Bartender, I want a very, very dry Martini!"
there is nothing but a dry powder on the bar stool
"Is that dry enough?"
Just how dry do you want it? Jesus tells us that unclean spirits when they are cast out are sent to dry places (Matthew 12:43; Luke 11:24). The dry places are the places where nourishment is difficult to find. Those who rely solely on themselves, who refuse spiritual council, the guidance of parents, who complain against bosses or teachers, find themselves living in a very dry place. Unfortunately these are the wages of independence, also known as rebellion.

The two panel cartoon at the right, which I reconstructed as best I could from memory, is one I saw years ago. I won't say what magazine. It illustrates the point that we often get more than we bargain for. When we ask for independence and freedom, we get a dryness which withers. Our spirituality runs out in long strands with little foliage and no fruit. It searches out the clefts in the rocks until in desperation it sinks its roots into any putrid pool that appears.

Why Do You Kick?

Acts 9:5 & 26:14   it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

The Rocky Soil

Luke   And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
